Is your kitchen an open kitchen?

Mine is CLOSED! I do not want you to help. I do not want you to see what I'm doing. I don't even want you to wash dishes with me. I'd just as soon have my guests think I cooked with a magic wand and pixie dust! I feel like Marian McEvoy, who says, "Let's just have you drinking wine and talking. You didn't come to work hard with me and watch me get upset over the sauce. I'll be out in a moment."

So, how do y'all feel about opening up your kitchen to helpful guests?

Answers:

1My kitchen is open to family members but when I am cooking I like to concentrate. Family members know though that if they cook in it they have to leave it as it was and wash and dry pots after them. They always come in to see what's cooking and peek in the pot or oven which is fine with me. Sometimes they want to learn something , so I let them and just guide them along. I believe the kitchen is the heart of the home as everyone gathers around it wonderful cooking aromas. I tend to sit with my guests and when they have gone do the cleaning. If someone wants to offer to carry things to the dining table or take a few plates away after eating to the kitchen, that's okay. I won't let them wash pots as they are my guests.

i hate open kitchens. i am about to remodel mine and close it. kitchens are smelly, noisy, greasy places. i do not want to wake up and smell last night's steak in my bedroom, on the second floor. any one that really cooks knows that hoods do not work, they are a money statement. the whole kitchen became the status symbol, the money statement, as in “i wasted a lot of money on fancy appliances that look great and a thai restaurant (boston market, kfc, and my personal chef) catered this dinner for me”. if we are spending tens of thousands of dollars to make kitchens look good and we barely have time or inclination to cook, i guess the least we can do is open them and show them off to anyone that knocks on our door.
i do not believe people actually cook in the open kitchens. they bring home a pizza box and prop it open on the fancy island. who wants a sofa in the kitchen? i do not like guests around when i am cooking. there is always a minor disaster that i rather keep private, as well as family recipes and secret recipes that should remain so.

i feel extremely uncomfortable with people that are not so close to me snooping in my kitchen - it is a forced intimacy. as for washing dishes, i do not want to go to a dinner in someone's house, nicely dressed and work, i do not invite people over to work for me. a hand carrying dirty dishes is where i draw the line. i mean, really, why don't we invite them over to clean the house before and maybe do the laundry? dirty dishes, dirty laundry, it is so much fun to do things with our guests; you get to know each other.

i think closed kitchens benefit the whole family, try watching a movie with all the noise that comes with preparing food or concentrating an assignment, play an instrument, you name it. research deep enough when we will find a link between attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, hearing loss obesity and the open kitchens. close the kitchen door, please.
